We recently spent a week in Paris and stayed in the 6th Arrondissement, also known as St. Germain des Pres.

We stayed at the wonderful Victoria Palace Hotel, in the Cherche Midi neighborhood. This is a neighborhood where we had not stayed before, and I loved it. The hotel is walking distance to the fabulous Luxembourg Gardens, the Latin Quarter, and Montparnasse. The hotel is also very close to a metro station (St. Placide), giving us entree to anywhere in Paris with  ease.

With guidance from the hotel desk clerk, we found many great local restaurants, so we had dinner in the neighborhood every night. I am happy to recommend the following restaurants and bistros:

Midi Vins
Our favorite has to be the little corner bistro, Midi Vins. Calling themselves a Bistrot a vins, this little place was packed the night that we were there and then again as we strolled by on another evening. The small, but comfortable space is filled with fresh flowers, and the atmosphere is cosy and romantic. The owners are very particular about their wine selection. We asked for a half bottle of Bordeaux and the proprietress chose one for us. She opened a full bottle and told us we would only be charged for the wine we consumed. We drank just a half bottle of this very good wine and were charged for just that – a half bottle! Their prices were totally reasonable for a wonderful dinner and great wine.

La Rotonde
An extensive menu with something for everyone, makes La Rotonde a great place for a nice, casual meal. The generous portions and delicious dishes are a true value in tres expensive Paris. Located at a busy intersection in a great neighborhood, people watchers delight as bustling Parisians of the neighborhood rush by.

La Ferrandaise
We had a delicious meal here one night with a group of friends. We each ordered something different and none of us was disappointed. Known for its meat dishes, La Ferrandaise has reasonably priced menus that also include fish and seafood.

Le Rousseau
Just a little cafe that is well decorated and inexpensive. Very comfortable and trendy at the same time, Le Rousseau is lively and fun. The food is simple and good…not great. We enjoyed our Steak-frites and saved our money for a splurge somewhere else.

Sud-Ouest & Cie – Le Bistro de Sud-Ouest a Paris
We ate at this bistro located on the busy Blvd de Montparnasse on a Sunday evening. More interesting looking restaurants were closed, so we thought we’d take our chance on this inviting place. We weren’t disappointed. They have a great special menu that includes a bottle of wine for a very good price. The bistro specializes in dishes from the Southwest region of France. Think duck… think confit…think foie gras. We sat next to two Frenchmen, one of whom was from the southwest and was enjoying food from his childhood. It was a wonderful way to spend our final night in Paris…enjoying good food and good company.
