Compton is a city in Los Angeles County famous for being the home of LA’s rappers as well as tennis champs, Serena and Venus Williams. Compton’s most famous resident, though, was George Bush Sr. who lived there when the city was known for its oil wells and still populated by many white residents. “White flight” in the 1950s and 1960s, however, resulted in a drying up of investment capital and Compton has not recovered since.[1]

Attractions
The main attraction in Compton is the Dominguez Ranch Adobe, reached by taking the exit off the 91 freeway at 18127 South Alameda Street. It is a history museum that chronicles the ascent of the adobe’s founder, Juan Jose Dominguez, a soldier who left Mexico to found the California missions. His long service of the military was rewarded in 1782 with the grant of 75,000 acres of land. Dominguez and his descendants became powerful in local politics when Compton grew in importance. The adobe ranch today has six rooms and features antiques and furnishings, providing a glimpse of life during the Spanish-Mexican era.[2]
