Travelers Checks Information

I’ve been told that when I want to go overseas, which I hope will be this winter, that I will want to have travelers checks to carry my money. Though I know it is never safe to carry large amounts of money with you at any time, I would think that these would be just as easy to lose or to have stolen as cold, hard cash. Granted, they say that they can replace these when they are stolen, but the burden of proof might be on the traveler, and it might take a while. There might just be a better way.

I have been told that even though travelers checks are a good idea, they aren’t as necessary as they once were. Though there are fees involved, many recommend using credit or debit cards when traveling. This helps with conversion too. If you can get your cash out of an ATM in a different country, you are going to get what you need when you need it, and you will also not have to worry about having the money converted into the currency of that particular country. This won’t work in all countries, but may very well work in most of Europe and in Australia. If it won’t work, you might still want to get the travelers checks in order to ensure you are somewhat protected from theft or loss.

Travelers Checks Facts

There is a downfall to this though, but I’m not sure how much of a downfall it is. When you use ATM or credit cards instead of travelers checks, you do have to pay a fee. There are times when the fees can be high. If you are trying to use an ATM for withdrawal from your accounts, you may not be able to find a machine that is compatible. You should go to your bank before you go and let them know where you will be going. They can tell you if there are machines there you can use, and they can also flag your account so you can withdraw more money than usual without your account being frozen. Some banks do this for security reasons. If too much is coming out, the assume you have been robbed and that someone else is using your money. I don’t know if there are fees involved with travelers checks, but if there are, this might even out anyway.
