Port Hardy is a small village on the northeastern coast of Vancouver Island. Its population is around 4,000. The town is heavily dependent on tourism, and is not only popular itself for its world-class cold water scuba diving, but serves as a base for travelers departing by ferry to Prince Rupert. In the summer months, in particular, the hotels and restaurants are usually packed, so advanced reservations is recommended.[1]

Attractions
Besides being a first-class scuba diving destination, Port Hardy is also the gateway to the Cape Scott Provincial Park and the San Josef Provincial Park, which are both habitats for wildlife such as deer, bald eagles, squirrels, black bears, and other mammals and birds. Both parks are filled with campsites and trails that lead into Port Hardy. Hikers will enjoy the Quatse Loop Nature Trail and beachcombers should visit Storey beach. You can also find many wildlife and fishing charters that will take you on exploratory excursions, including whale-watching if you are interested.[2]

Most of the city attractions are found in downtown Port Hardy, where there are numerous bars, restaurants, and shopping centers. Notable sights include the clock tower, the seawall, and Rotary Park, which peers over Hardy Bay.[3]

The highlight of the year is the third weekend of July when the town celebrates Filomi Days at Rotary Park. Festivities abound during this weekend, replete with entertainment, arts and crafts, bake sales, carnival-like activities, and beer and fireworks. There is also a dance and a parade. The celebration is dedicated to fishing, logging, and mining – three resources the town relies on heavily.[4]

How to Get There
The community can be reached by ferry or along Highway 19, which runs north-south along the eastern coast from Nanaimo.[5] At Port Hardy, the B.C. ferries depart to and from Prince Rupert on the main land, passing the scenic Inside Passage in a 274-mile (441 kilometer) journey. [6]
