I just found the best way to get between the Amalfi Coast and Naples. It’s so easy, I can’t believe I’ve never come across it before. A SITA bus runs directly from the town of Amalfi to Piazza Garibaldi in Naples. It costs 3.40 and takes 2 hours. Before I’d always taken a bus and a train; it’s twice the price and takes around 3 hours. SITA buses run regularly. For travel times, just visit the nearest SITA station.
I’m in Naples now, checked into my hotel. I can’t wait to hit the street and soak up the scene, but I’m also here working on a travel guide. I’ve been working on this guide for a few months and am putting on the finishing touches. Writing a travel guide from scratch is a complex process that requires looking at a city from many perspectives. And yeah, like they say, travel writing isn’t well paid or all that glorious. I’ve been writing guides for almost two years, and I spend most of my travels calling restaurants, ringing doorbells, and verifying the prices of audio guides. This is the first time I’ve gotten to design a guide from the ground up, and it’s allowed me to get to know the city’s personality in order to help others understand Naples before arriving.
In the next three days I’ll visit the Capodimonte Museum, the National Archeology Museum, the grand Royal Palace in the nearby city of Caserta (said to rival Versailles), and the Phlegraen Fields, known here as Campi Flegrei. The wireless internet in my hotel isn’t working, which could be detrimental to my work. The concierge says that he’s doing all he can, which seems to be staring forlornly at the router every few minutes. This is a common problem in Italy: low-budget accommodations often say that they have internet, but somehow it isn’t working when you arrive. If internet is important to you, I highly suggest calling before booking to ensure that their web listings are accurate. I would have done so, but I’ve stayed in this hotel several times and the Wi-Fi has always worked.
In the absence of internet, I’m off to Antica Pizzeria Da Michele, the best pizzeria in Naples (in my opinion).
