Set amid one of the most picturesque areas in the UK, Bluestone Resort is located in Pembrokeshire Coast National Park and is only two hours from Cardiff and 10 miles from Whitland train station. Not only does Bluestone boast stunning views and an inviting landscape, but the accommodations are also environmentally friendly. Bluestone’s 178 timber lodges, each of which can sleep from four to eight people, offer a luxury standard of accommodation. The lodges are stylish and comfortable, but most noteworthy, they are energy-efficient and built with sustainable European whitewood. The semi-detached Caldey lodges have solar panels for water heating.
In the village you’ll find a pub, three restaurants, a wine shop (perfect for self-catering, but you can also drink here), shops selling local produce and much more. Bluestone even chooses their food suppliers according to their environmental performance and where they are located in relation to the resort as well as, of course, quality and price. Links with local tourism operators are just a few of the ways in which Bluestone helps support the Pembrokeshire economy. The site employs around 350 people in year-round jobs. Recent movies such as Harry Potter and the new Robin Hood have been filmed on location here, with locals given parts in the movies.
Bluestone’s Blue Lagoon water park is of particular interest to families seeking a fun-filled, active holiday. It is great for kids but adults will want to play here too. The park’s water is heated by an on-site biomass energy centre, fuelled by woodchips and crops grown by local farmers. The water park features The Well, an exclusive spa which offers a traditional sauna, an herbal steam room and even a special Celtic-influenced sauna – plus showers as well as an ice room to help you cool down.
Many walking/hiking trails are located within Bluestone’s 500-acre site where much effort has been made to improve biodiversity in what was formerly an intensively managed farm – including the planting, of 168,000 plants and trees. And there are plenty of other activities to keep you busy at this estate. You can, for instance, test your skills at archery, try laser clay pigeon shooting, learn some bushcraft skills or try out the hands-on scientific exhibits at Techniquest. Don’t miss the Adventure Centre where you will find a giant countryside-themed adventure playground complete with suspension bridges, crawl tubes, nets and ladders winding their way down to floor level. If you are an adrenaline junkie then try the local cliff jumping tour. You can go cycling, play golf or just relax on one of the region’s famous sandy beaches. Take a boat trip to Skomer Island and visit the community of puffins known as “Pembrokeshire penguins”. Last but not least, you must visit the mighty Pembroke Castle and Carew Castle which has the only restored Tidal Mill in Wales along with an 11th-century Celtic cross.
Bluestone clearly offers a chance to enjoy an action packed holiday in first class, environmentally friendly accommodations, while making the most of this unspoiled, beautiful corner of Wales.
