Birganj is a busy border town in the southern region of Nepal. Many visitors from the Indian town of Bihar enter Nepal through Birganj – and it is hardly the best introduction of the country. The border is about two miles south of the town center.

Today, Birganj is a rapidly growing industrial town specializing in fish-breeding, the manufacturing of cigarettes, and the refining of sugar. The town is only a few miles away from the Indian town of Raxaul. Most of the travelers who come to Birganj only use Birganj as a pit stop or an overnight stay on the way to Kathmandu or the Royal Chitwan National Park in the valley of inner Terai.
